Contextualizing Interactive Architecture

This chapter outlines a theoretical framework for the contextualization of computationally augmented architecture. We start by exploring interactivity, a concept that emerged in the practices and discourse of cybernetics and post-war cultural phenomena, and is now frequently used in the context of our contemporary digital culture. We draw on human–computer interaction (conversational, situated and embodied models of interaction), social and post-cognitivist theories of technology (actor–network theory, distributed cognition and activity theory), and theories of technology that use insights from the phenomenological tradition (the post-phenomenological approach to technology), in order to examine the symmetrical and non-symmetrical associations and synergies between people and computationally augmented environments.

We do not aim to include a complete bibliographic review of the related theories, because this would be a task beyond the scope of this book. Instead, we attempt to contextualize our object of inquiry within the main corpus of the theories presented, in order to determine conceptual guidelines for our purposes.
